poleon-away

For the fans and the gaffer!

Hat-trick hero (for the second time this season) Dominic Poleon dedicated Fleet’s 5-2 away win to the travelling support and to his manager as the top scorer and his teammates seized the opportunity to put their previous League outing behind them.

“They’re travelling to support us and it’s only right we give our all on the pitch to make it worthwhile,” Poleon said of the away support who overcame the fuel crisis, bad weather and long mileage in midweek to cheer on the Fleet. “We want to give them something to go back with… and also for our gaffer, for the hard work he’s putting in and again for ourselves. We want to go out there and put our performances in and get three points.”

Seven-goal Poleon predictably took the headlines on the night but he was humble about the nature of his hat-trick and in particular a fine solo run and strike for his second and Fleet’s third on the night.

“The first one’s a tap in,” he said. “The second one I think the ball got blocked off Sefa and I thought just go, just go, take your time and get a strike off. And luckily it went in and my third one, Raks is there again – the partnership! I’ve got to thank my teammates for getting me in those positions, it was a nice ball from Raks and a little dink for the finish. [A hat-trick’s] nice but I’m just happy we’ve bounced back and got the win.”

Either side of his hat-trick, there were goals from behind him as Greg Cundle and Jack Paxman weighed in with one apiece.

“I don’t really care how we win so long as we win, so the more [goals from the middle] the merrier,” Poleon said. “Definitely credit to the lads for getting on the scoresheet today and I think it was an all-round great performance. We just need to keep working on our performances, chipping the wins off and taking it game by game.”

The league table was certainly healthier reading for the Fleet after the three points saw a climb of nine places but at this early stage, Poleon says there’s no pressure on his side to worry about exactly where they are in the rankings.

“I think we’ve just got to focus on us,” he said. “We can’t look into the table too much right now. It’s still early and we’ll just take it game by game. We have to just keep working on our performances and getting better. Again, credit to my teammates today – I’m happy to get the win and the three points.

“We’ve put a lot of work in, especially over the pre-season. We’ve not performed to our best in the previous game so it was important that we put our marker down, put the bad performances behind us and come out here and get the three points. We all knew that we’ve not been good enough in past games so we wanted to come here away to Chippenham, get the three points and go home!”
