Macca hails “big presence” Ashmore

Daryl McMahon hailed the contribution of Nathan Ashmore after the goalkeeper saved two Whitehawk penalties to help Fleet into Saturday’s promotion final. “We could have killed them off on Wednesday night but we left them with a chance today, ” McMahon said in conversation with BBC Radio Kent’s Charles Webster and KentOnline’s Steve Tervet. “They’re a good side, they’re on a fantastic run and you’ve got to give credit for that. Nathan’s a big presence in goal, strong and intimidating

“First half we were OK, second half they got the better of it and extra time was two tired teams where you’re looking at a mistake.ย But it is what it is and I said to the players in there, I don’t care about it, we’re in the final.

“We won’t treat the finalย differently, it’s a game of 90 minutes and we’ll treat it that way. The atmosphere was terrific today, the fans really inspired the players. I’m delighted for them and hopefully we can do it again next week. [Against Maidstone] there’s no animosity, I’m sure Jay [Saunders] will say the same, we get onย quite well and I think it’ll be a cracking game.”
