York City 1-1 Fleet

Mark Cousins became the first Fleet goalkeeper to score as he left it until the last minute of time added on to deny York all three points with a headed equaliser.

Fleet named an unchanged team after the point against Barnet and it earned them another point here this afternoon.

York put the pressure on in the opening five minutes as they closed down Hayden White to then win possession in the box. The hosts battled through the Fleet defence and the ball slotted into the path of Olly Green who fired a shot but Ben Chapman made the block.

The Fleet might have been able to clear that chance out but they were unable to deny Lennell John-Lewis the opener in the sixth minute. The skipper timed his run perfectly to beat the offside flag and a low shot from the right boot beat Cousins, although there was more than a suspicion of a foul on Joe Martin.

The Fleet came close to an equaliser on the quarter-hour mark when Greg Cundle unleashed a shot from the edge of the area but it skimmed past the post. It was a close call for the Fleet once again a little later, this time Toby Edser inches off target. Dom Poleon then made a superb run to keep the ball in play and cut it back to Edser who was positioned in front of an open net but he fired the ball wide.

Play settled but the Fleet stepped up both possession and chances with another strong opportunity coming in the 38th minute. A powerful shot from close range was palmed away by George Sykes-Kenworthy to keep York ahead minutes before half-time.

Five minutes were added on to the initial 45 and the Fleet continued to search for an equaliser, Dom Samuel launching a shot from 25 yards out – the ball going just wide of the target.

The Fleet went into the break behind but having created chances and they continued the second half where they left off when Cundle’s blistering shot was blocked by Sykes-Kenworthy. A slow-paced second period saw the Fleet again lead the possession in search for an equaliser which Cundle almost snatched in the 70th minute but his low shot took a deflection and was narrowly wide.

The hosts struggled to find their feet in the second half as it was the 92 Fleet fans who were treated to most of the close calls at their end. Samuel saw a close-range header collected by the York keeper before Poleon could slide a foot to the ball.

Neat skilful play from Callum Howe at the other end allowed him to carry the ball around substitute Craig Tanner to create a rare half-chance for the hosts but the Fleet were able to clear their lines. Poleon was next to pull the trigger to claim a shot on target but once again, the gloves of Kenworthy kept the hosts ahead and looking like taking the points.

But the moment did come for the Fleet in the 95th minute, almost as late as they left it at Hartlepool to win a point. A corner delivery was whipped into the area and as he often does when his side are trailing, Cousins was waiting in the box and it was none other than he who headed the ball home to secure a valuable – and historic – point for the Fleet!
