On This Day: March 21

21st March 1959
Fleet 2-1 Trowbridge Town
Defending our Southern League title of the previous season (the league having become the short-lived Southern League SE Zone), Jackie Bridge and Jimmy Fletcher scored in front of a 2,222 crowd as we kept the pressure on for a second successive title. But it wasn’t to be as we were pipped to first place by Bedford Town.

21st March 2009
Fleet 0-1 Stevenage Borough
After 15 games unconquered in the FA Trophy over two seasons, Stevenage finally ended our hold over the competition as they won this semi-final, second leg and denied us the chance of a second Wembley appearance. Stacy Long and Luke Moore were centimetres away from levelling the aggregate score to 3-3 as Fleet dominated for long spells but Boro (with Andy Drury and Lawrie Wilson, pictured, in their side) made a late chance count against tiring legs and went through by 4-2.

Everyone’s a Fleet player in this photograph from 2009!

21st March 2017
Fleet 8-0 Bishop’s Stortford
Locked in a blow-for-blow battle with Maidenhead for the top spot in the National League South, the Berkshire side managed six goals of their own on the night but were outdone as Fleet smashed eight past Bishop’s Stortford for a club record win and the only time in which two players had managed a hat-trick (Anthony Cook and Darren McQueen). Aside from those lads taking all the goal credits, there were individual strikes for Bradley Bubb and the record-clincher courtesy of Danny Kedwell. It was a good game in which to make his debut for loanee Jake Howells… indeed it was the only time we saw him in a Fleet shirt!

Hat-trick boys
