Walking football team looking to recruit new players

The Fleet’s Walking Football teams are keen to recruit new players to their ranks. The two sides representing the club are split into Over 50s and Over 60s sections, with the latter particularly keen for numbers to swell the squad.

The EUFC Walking Football section was formed in 2016 and responsibility passed to the Fleet Supporters Trust the following year.

Following an appeal in the matchday programme this weekend, one of the Fleet’s walking footballers and stadium announcer Steve East said, “With such a collection of finely-honed, mature athletes, injury, illness and the rest of life’s challenges have invariably placed pressure on our relatively small playing squads. So, we are looking for more players. In particular, our Over 60s are desperately in need of players to boost the squad. Without a few recruits, the viability of the team is now in doubt.”

So, if you are over 50 (or even better, over 60) and would like to have the honour of pulling on a Fleet shirt and playing for our club, then please get in touch. Both teams train locally once a week and in addition to playing in the Kent Walking Football League, also contest occasional friendlies against the likes of West Ham United and in cup competitions.

Please don’t be shy, email info@eufc.co.uk with your details and we will be in touch with further information.

In promoting walking football, we were also delighted to welcome former Fleet defender Gary Groom back to the Kuflink Stadium) once again (pictured above) to show off the Walking Football World Cup he won with England and promote the sport. Gary, a regular visitor back to the Fleet, played 117 times for us in two spells in the late Eighties and early Nineties, winning promotion in 1988/89 and again in 1993/94. He was part of the England Over 50s squad that won the first ever World Nations Cup last season while another former Fleet player, Andy Douglas, celebrated similar success with the Over 60s squad.
