Varney reacts to Dover criticism

The Fleet’s vice chairman Peter Varney has reacted to criticism from Dover chairman Jim Parmenter over recent signings by the club.

Varney said, “It is disappointing that the Dover chairman is publicly criticising a fellow Conference South club and its players. Our wage budget is a matter of public record because of the open nature of the offer we were obliged to make to MyFC, the former owners of Ebbsfleet United.

“We operate a wage cap here and players like Daryl McMahon have taken a significant cut to come here and has done so for footballing reasons. The negotiations with Dover for Daryl’s transfer were very amicable and we paid ยฃ1,000 more than Dover paid for a player who their chairman described to me as the ‘best player in the Conference South last season’.

“The other Dover players we have signed were not offered terms by Dover so I fail to understand how they can be accused of chasing money. Our budget is by no means the highest in the League and as I have said previously we will run Ebbsfleet United in a financially responsible manner.”
