“Sutton deserved their win” says Fleet boss

Fleet boss Daryl McMahon admitted his side’s title race was over after a disappointing performance at Sutton United yesterday. He spoke to BBC Radio Kent’s Charles Webster, saying: “I thought we started the game really well, then when Sutton scored they just dominated. We didn’t create enough and they defended well against us. We never got going in the second half, the timing of the goal was horrendous for us and perfect for them but I’ve got no complaints, Sutton deserved their win.”

And he conceded the title to Paul Doswell’s men whose lead at the top is now pretty much unassailable. “The title’s over – even if we’d won today the title was still in Sutton’s hands,” said McMahon. “We’ve got two weeks before the Eastbourne game and we get ready for the play-offs, we’ll watch the opposition and prepare like we always do. Everyone’s down today, it’s not a nice feeling. But our season’s not over and we can’t spend too much time dwelling on it.”

McMahon felt for the fans, who received an ovation from the players before the game for their support throughout the season. “The fans were excellent, they’ve been terrific all season and I’m disappointed we didn’t give them a performance. We need them in the play-offs, we’re one club, and let’s move on.”
