Risk pays off as Wood works a win

Dennis Kutrieb says Will Wood fires shots in at goal like his winner plenty of times in training – but the midfielder admitted his 25-yard goal-of-the-season contender was a bit of a risk!

“I think sometimes it takes a goal like that to win a game like this,” Wood told BBC Radio Kent’s Charles Webster. “We’ve seen it a couple of times where we’ve had a lot of the ball and struggled to score and it was getting towards being one of them games but sometimes it takes someone to just take a risk and I took a risk, I had a shot and thankfully it was in the top corner.

“We do a lot of work in and around the box and when we pass the ball well around the box, no-one can get near us. So sometimes to shoot is the wrong option and the gaffer always says you’ve got probably three or four out of 10 that you’re going to score but the possibility of moving it, you’ve got a higher chance. But it sat up nicely and I thought I’d take a risk and thankfully it’s come off and we’ve got three points.

“I got the ball and the gaffer has been saying to me go inside but when you come inside, don’t shoot from too far out. You can see I look to shoot and then I thought, no, it’s not right so I took another touch and just let it go and thankfully it’s come nice off my foot. As soon as I looked up I knew it was going in, the keeper was nowhere near it, so personally for me it’s a great feeling.”

Wood started the game against Hampton after coming on as a second-half substitute in the midweek defeat at Maidstone but he cautions the two previous results should be put in the context of the rest of Fleet’s season.

“It’s been tough,” he said of the past seven days. “That win was what we needed, it’s massive for us to forget about the two [previous] games and push on from here really now. But it’s only two games – I know the scoreline is different but we could have lost them 1-0, we could have lost them like we did. There’s too much quality in this team and you can’t lose that many games with the players we’ve got in the building. We made a few changes today and it didn’t make any difference to us, we looked strong, we looked fit, we should have scored a lot more really and I think we had a vast majority of the ball as usual. It is a bit of a relief but because of the players we’ve got, the experience, I don’t think we ever get too down. You can see the way we play, even when we lose, we still play with confidence.

“So roll on Dartford on Tuesday, we’re all buzzing today so we’ll be fighting to get three points again. [The table] is getting tough and the fans after the last two games will be getting a bit shaky but we’ve got so many more games to play and if we keep performing like this we’ll be up there at the end of the season definitely.
