O’Neill’s the deal in defence

Ebbsfleet United’s second new signing of Thursday is revealed this afternoon as former Southend United, Gillingham and AFC Wimbledon right-back Luke O’Neill.

With more than 300 Football League appearances through his career, the defender is another experienced head for Dennis Kutrieb as pre-season fast approaches.

The 30-year-old former Leicester City academy product, who made his senior debut in the Championship for the Foxes, helped Mansfield Town into the Conference play-offs in his first full season of competitive football in 2011/12.

Such was O’Neill’s form with the Stags that Burnley paid a fee to take him to Turf Moor in 2012. He played for York City and Scunthorpe United on loan before two seasons at League One level with Southend United.

The defender continued to see regular action in League One with Gillingham where he spent a further two seasons and AFC Wimbledon on another two-year deal. Last season, O’Neill signed for Kettering Town briefly before a return to the EFL with Stevenage where he helped the Boro secure the points that ensured their League status.

An excellent crosser of the ball from his right-back berth and with clinical set-piece delivery too, O’Neill has an excellent record of assists to add to his defensive duties.
