Maurice Cox RIP

The club is extremely saddened to learn of the death last night of our former kit and maintenance man Maurice Cox.

Maurice has a special place in Fleet history having been part of the staff setup back in 2008 when we won the FA Trophy Final at Wembley.

Suited and booted that day like all the squad, rather than wearing his trademark Fleet tracksuit that served him so well in countless league and cup matches up and down the country, Maurice was deservedly proud as punch of his involvement in that fantastic triumph.

Maurice can be seen in this video from that memorable season, giving Sacha Opinel short shrift about the player of the year vote!

And while he is best remembered at Stonebridge Road as a kit man, Maurice was one of those club men/volunteers who turned his hand to numerous other tasks, being responsible for maintenance at the ground alongside Colin Stevens for a number of years as well.

Maurice became actively involved in the Fleet under Andy Ford from 2003 and worked with Liam Daish as well, retiring from formal club duties in 2010 – but of course like all those who have served the club so well in the past, his passion and support was not confined to just those years.

Aside from the Fleet, Maurice was also very involved in local football, helping out around Gravesend’s Sun FC for many years.

All of us at the Fleet and we are certain the many staff, players and fans who spent time in Maurice’s company will vouch for his dedication and how much he contributed to the success at Stonebridge Road in that period. We extend our sympathies to Maurice’s family and our thoughts are with them at this time.
