In like Finn as Alex returns

The Fleet begin this week’s round of squad news with the announcement that Alex Finney will be back for the 2022/23 season after he agreed a new deal for the campaign ahead.

The 26-year-old former QPR, Maidstone United and Aldershot Town defender was a vital cog at the back as the Fleet ended the season strongly, going eight games unbeaten up to the promotion final.

Finney, who first signed for the Fleet last July, battled back from injury to record 14 games in 2021/22, scoring his first goal for the club in the 4-2 win at Welling United. He appeared in seven of the final nine matches of the season, Fleet winning five and drawing one of those, to serve as the perfect springboard for the player to go into the new 2022/23 campaign.

Finney’s calming and assured performances have been hailed by many Fleet observers. His early career was spent with Bolton Wanderers and QPR and, having played a division higher for much of his career since then, the defender’s experience will be another important piece in Dennis Kutrieb’s squad plans.
