Goal hero Phillips eyes partnership

Mark Phillips got his first goal in an Ebbsfleet shirt this afternoon to celebrate his bounce back from a car crash and he heralded a burgeoning partnership with Jack Powell.

“Jack’s got some good deliveries,” Phillips told Charles Webster for BBC Radio Kent, “so I can read a player’s delivery and know where they’re going to put it. I think I got double figures one season, I like getting a few goals from that. As I’ve got older I’ve realised there’s a nack, scoring from set pieces is a nack. I think you’ve got to look at the way he steps up to the ball. So it was nice to get one but I think it could have been three today.”

Phillips scored a few in pre-season after joining from Braintree but with injury and misfortune, it’s only now the player can show Fleet fans what he’s capable of. And his summer switch from the National League is something he has put down to the ambition shown to him on joining the club.

“We performed miracles at Braintree with literally nothing at the club on the financial side of it,” he said. “Like Leicester…. At Braintree Danny [Cowley] left, a lot of players were leaving and they didn’t make much effort to keep anyone so an ambitious club like Ebbsfleet, who obviously hadn’t quite got there the last two years, was somewhere I felt I could help and that’s the challenge for me.”
