Carshalton rekindles cup memories of old

The Fleet will play Carshalton Athletic in Surrey on September 18th following the draw today for the Emirates FA Cup Second Qualifying Round.

The Isthmian Premier side lie sixth in their division and play at the War Memorial Sports Ground in their home town; they currently have the same playing record as the Fleet so far, winning two, drawing one and losing one.

And they beat Kennington 3-0 at the weekend to book their place in the Second Qualifying Round.

Carshalton and the Fleet have played each other a couple of times in cup action, most notably way back in 1987 when the Robins won 6-2 in an infamous game that saw their goalkeeper Les Cleevely sent off at the Swanscombe End, a feat that was repeated in an FA Trophy meeting two years later that Fleet won 2-0.

In 1995, Fleet defeated Carshalton in an epic FA Cup run that took us to the Third Round and to Villa Park to take on Premier League Aston Villa.

And in 2007/08, it was a win over Carshalton in the FA Trophy that kick-started the campaign that ended in victory at Wembley Stadium – so there’s plenty of history for the Fleet to get their teeth sunk into ahead of this season’s meeting in two weeks.
