Wide man Willmott adds wing flair

Daryl McMahon has made his third midfield signing of the close season by landing pacy winger Robbie Willmott, recently released by Newport County.

At 25 years of age, like the two signings before him, Willmott has a wealth of Conference Premier and League Two experience, having played almost 300 games and scored 50 goals for the likes of Cambridge United, Luton Town and Newport.

Willmott joined Cambridge United as a scholar in 2006, featuring in the first team a year later aged 17. He played in the U’s play-off campaign in 2009, alongside McMahon, scoring against the Fleet in a 4-0 win. He went on to appear more than 100 times for Cambridge before a £50,000 fee took him to Luton Town in 2011, just one of many clubs who had scouted him that season.

He helped Luton into that season’s promotion final, where they were defeated by Danny Kedwell’s penalty for AFC Wimbledon, and he was the only Hatters player to make the Conference Team of the Season in 2010/11. He was once again on the losing side for Luton in the following season’s promotion final, where he lined up alongside John-Paul Kissock, and he rejoined Cambridge at the start of the 2012/13 season.

He moved on to Newport County in 2013, helping guide them to third and eventual promotion to the Football League via the play-offs, and was almost ever-present in their first season in League Two.

Willmott can operate on either wing or behind the front two and has proved to have an eye for goal at each of his previous clubs.
