It’s been a tough few weeks with five straight away games and it’s nice to get back here in familiar surroundings. I write these notes without knowing the result at Gosport, but I felt that the return of four points from the first four away fixtures was less than we deserved. On another day against Whitehawk and with a stronger referee we would have and deserved to receive two stonewall penalties. We all feel that had we extended our lead or gone in front for a second time we would have gained all three points.

The Havant game was a very cagey and tight affair and in my opinion neither side did enough to win it and a draw would have been a fair result. It’s games like that, that you have to make sure it’s not you that gives the opponent any opportunities to sneak the win and unfortunately we did have one momentary lapse in concentration and Havant took full advantage to take all three points with their only shot on target in the second half.

Last Saturday saw us go to Boreham Wood and in fairness we have no complaints about the result. It is important when you are not performing at your best to stay in the game and at 1-0 down I still always fancy us to get back on level terms but conceding a second goal so early after the restart gave us a mountain to climb and one we couldn’t quite recover from.

On reflection I feel that we’ve certainly been the victim of some decisions that haven’t gone our way this season and the cliche that it evens itself out certainly hasn’t applied to us. We all accept that a referee’s job is difficult and mistakes will be made, but the recent penalty shouts at Whitehawk and Boreham Wood have left me a little perplexed as to what the referees are looking for. The most disappointing aspect would be that on both occasions at Whitehawk the assistant referee was no more than 10 yards from the incident with a very good view on both occasions and I can’t understand why he couldn’t have made the decision.

It’s extremely difficult to keep your emotions in check when we all know how small the margins are between success and failure. It’s easy giving the small unimportant fouls outside the box, but on the big decisions this season we have certainly been hard done by.

Lastly, I’d like to welcome Tommy Warrilow, his staff and directors and of course the supporters of Tonbridge Angels FC. Tom is somebody who I’ve got to know well over the last few seasons and he’s a genuine football man. He loves the game and has a passion for his club. It’s in tough times that you truly see the character of a person and Tommy has shown he has it in abundance.
